MicroSteps® Therapy : Desensitization of Habits, Routines, Rituals, and Traditions, also referred to as MST, helps people achieve goals by learning how to cope with change.
People gain comfort from deeply rooted Habits, Routines, Rituals, and Traditions, commonly called HRRTs. This makes change difficult and contributes to avoidance, resistance, and relapse.
“But I always stop for fast-food on my way to work!” This simple Routine creates a feeling of being nurtured, comforted, and is easier than making breakfast before work.
“My boss said I’ll be fired, if I’m late again. But I couldn’t resist stopping at McDonald’s on the way to work.” Even with short-term success, people return to their old ways, for comfort.
MicroSteps® Therapy is a Cognitive-Behavioral Tool that combines with a bit of insight to help people get unstuck and move forward.
As an example, people tell themselves,“I am going to lose weight this year, for sure!” Then they go on a diet. Most diets “flood” people with extreme change that disrupt Habits, Routines, Rituals and Traditions.
Inevitably, events such a wedding, graduation, holiday, divorce, illness, family vacation, children's birthday party, job change, or numerous other stressors happen. Consequently, people return to familiar HRRTs for calm- i.e. they return home.
This repeated relapse creates a resistance to change. Hope gets lost in the process.
MicroSteps® Therapy helps the people identify emotional responses to Habits, Routines, Rituals, and Traditions they have developed over a lifetime.
Taking specifically identified MicroSteps® to make tiny changes, prevents the anxiety and resistance related to all-or-nothing approaches.
Undesired Habits, Routines, Rituals and Traditions (HRRTs) are slowly desensitized, allowing people to achieve their goals, develop confidence, and improve self-esteem. Gradually, the new HRRTs become a new comfort zone — preventing relapse.
One small step — is progress.
